San Diego Sunshine

Even though I can't imagine who has time to read blogs, I'm always intrigued by a free offer, so here's my contribution to the World of Blog. As a Grandma, I have had a lot of years to accumulate views on various topics. As a retired library media specialist, I enjoy researching all kinds of issues. As an American citizen, I am troubled by what my government is doing in Iraq and Afghanistan, to say nothing of domestically. As a Christian, my desire is to spread peace and caring-ness.

Photo-blogging

Dear Gentle Reader,

Apparently, posting a photo on one's blog is more complicated than it would appear on the surface. Having downloaded the photo program "Hello," and followed the instructions, the only new item on the blog (you can see it in my bio section) is a little box with an x. The reason that you can still see it is that the little box wants to stay there and will not let me delete it, no matter what! But it is no substitute for the photo that I had envisioned gracing this blog.
Oh well, a photo is probably not that essential for a blog. It was just going to be San Diego flowers, in any case.

My morning walk was not around Sail Bay due to the wind. Instead, I walked up the hill and noticed a lot of colored foliage on the trees. San Diego does have deciduous trees but they're in a minority. (Did you know that the word "deciduous" is also applied to teeth, since "baby teeth" also fall out. We both learned something today!)

Here's the progress report on my cold: the grapefruit seed extract in combination with frequent salt-water gargles seems to be helping! At least, I was well enough to go for our mid-week date today with Dick. We had delicious fish tacos at Santana's in Pacific Beach. The restaurant is very pretty with colorful flowers and nice landscaping outside a wall of windows. And how long has it been since you saw a jukebox at a restaurant? Santana's has a CD jukebox. Mostly the customers seem to like loud Mexican music with a lot of oom-pahs, kind of like American polkas.

My good friend Connie has agreed to lead the Love Family meeting tomorrow in the unlikely event (I'm thinking positively) that I won't be well enough to be there. Do you have prayer requests? If so, I'll write them down and take them to the next meeting with me.
Blessings and peace...

Sneezing in the Sunshine

My first post should contain something gripping. But I'm just trying to overcome a cold that my husband shared with me! I can tell you what hasn't worked, however. AirBorne, the widely touted OTC product that contains herbs and Vitamin C, did make me feel better for the few hours after I'd taken it. (It's like a tastier Alka-Seltzer.) But it didn't avert the onslaught of the cold.
I also tried: hydrogen peroxide in my ears; swallowing chopped up garlic bits whole (a big gulp of water); Zicam (it made me stuffier). The results are still out on GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract). You put a few drops into water, and it tastes dreadful but may be more effective than any of the other home remedies (which isn't saying much.)
The great aspect about living in San Diego is that, even with a bad cold, a person can go outside in the warm sunshine and feel practically normal again! Having grown up in Iowa and having spent much of my adult life in Wisconsin, this is not a small thing.
This morning I walked to the neighborhood library (also a blessing in my life!) and checked out a Hoagy Carmeichal CD. One of the songs was "Heart and Soul," an old standard that my friends and I used to play on the piano when we were adolescents.
In the mail I was pleased to find a package from an on-line company at www.singers.com. It was Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians' rendition of "The Nutcracker Suite," with cute lyrics that I had loved as a child. But it turned out to offer only five of the selections, and my recollection is that the original record had numerous others.
Angela is my Russian-American grandchild, not quite two years old, and I hope to share this wonderful recording with her when she gets a little older.
My first blog is longer than I expected! Grace and peace to any readers!
